History of Elkhart, Indiana
History of Elkhart, Indiana
A short drive east of South Bend, Indiana lies the town of Elkhart. Nestled between the St. Joseph and Elkhart Rivers, this friendly American town is the perfect place to raise a family. As part of the metropolitan area that stretches between northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, Elkhart welcomes visitors and new residents from all walks of life.

Originally founded as the village of Pulaski in 1829, Elkhart’s original claim to fame was the post office it had built in its city limit. Over the years, more and more New Englanders moved to the town, making it a staunch abolitionist front in the Civil War. By the turn of the century, the production of musical instruments and medical companies in the county brought in many jobs.

It wasn’t long until recreational vehicle production soared, revolutionizing the town’s reputation. Now, Elkhart is referred to as the “RV Capital of the World.” You can discover how the industry changed the city by visiting the RV/HM Hall of Fame and Museum, which showcases many of those vehicles from throughout the past century. In addition, you can learn about other historic milestones at the National New York Center Railroad Museum and the Midwest Museum of American Art.

Elkhart is also a beautiful area to spend a day outside, thanks to its numerous parks. You’ll find many residents strolling through the Wellfield Botanic Gardens and Lincoln’s Enchanted Gardens. In the evening, spend your time walking the Riverwalk along Island Park and then catch a show at the Lerner Theater.

Throughout the year, Elkhart comes alive with many renowned festivals, with its Jazz Festival and its County Fair being some of the biggest in the area.

Whether you’re new to Elkhart or simply live nearby and want to spend the day somewhere fun, Elkhart—and us here at Tom Naquin Automotive—are glad to welcome you.
